He was a grown man at the time of the first white settlements along the Murray, and he acted as policetracker in the l860s. In his youth he had two successive narrow escapes from death: he was speared in a tribal fight and accidentally poisoned by bad meat. The old Wembawemba men foretold that two such brushes with death signified that Mukuwitha would live to a remarkable age, which he did.
